Wildlife Rescue Center
The Wildlife Rescue Center (WRC) of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) started as a showcase of animals which was one of the major attractions of the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center located on a sprawling 24-hectare land area along North Avenue in Quezon City.
The WRC serves as temporary shelter / repository for confiscated, donated, retrieved, sick, injured and abandoned wildlife species. In pursuance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) mandate on the conservation and protection of the country’s resources and as part of the commitment to the Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES), the mini zoo expanded to become a rescue center for wild animals and plants confiscated due to illegal trade since the late 80’s.
The WRC also serves as a venue for education, training and research on species of plants and animals, wildlife management, husbandry, physiology, etc. Schools like the University of the Philippines, Benguet State University, etc. send their veterinary students to conduct their training/internship at the Center. Other schools like the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of Sto. Tomas, etc. would conduct animal behavior, biology and even architectural design studies at the Center.
